Mostly Delayed Lately
![]() |
Oh, just hanging out in the airport at midnight. (I'm in the red dress) |
Sometimes I'm assigned a trip, and I start and finish it as planned. And sometimes, lately, I start a trip and it goes completely different than expected. These differences can be accredited to reroutes, delays, and irregular operations.
Often times these things can be frustrating, but I've learned to look at my trip schedule and rotation (the trip "itinerary", so to say) as an idea more so than something that is set in stone. A trip rotation is a scheduled idea of where a flight should depart and land and what times these flights are expected to do so. In the airline industry, there are weird things that can happen: weather issues, air traffic issues (imagine rush hour type traffic in the air), mechanical delays (issues with an aircraft), and so on! The more the believed rotation is looked at as a scheduled idea rather than something that is set in stone and supposed to happen, the less stress a flight attendant will feel during a trip with irregular operations! Of course, this girl loves a trip that starts and finishes as planned, but I have learned to understand not to sweat the small stuff on trying days of flying.

I say ALL of this to say:
It's.... STORY TIME.
Well, not so much story time as it is pictures of myself and my awesome crew during one of our delays (due to weather) during my most recent trip.
On paper, this trip looked easy! And if I'm being honest, it was and still is an easy trip. It was a multi day trip of three days. The first day was scheduled for three easy and short flights, day two had two flights, and day three had two flights, but I only had to work one of those flights. (cool, I know).
Day two is where things got weird.
My crew was scheduled for a short layover in Washington, DC. We were pumped and ready to go on the start of day two since we had such a long layover from day one. As day two eases through, our last flight to DC was delayed. We went from arriving in DC at a little after 11:00pm (already late for this old soul) to arriving around 2:30am. There was a ground stop, due to weather, at the JFK airport in New York. This affected most of the east cost.
We found out about this ground stop after we landed from our first flight, right before rushing to our next gate to DC (thinking it was still on time).
.......so, what did we do when we arrived to our gate and find out our flight is almost two hours delayed? Threw a fit in the airport, that's right!!!
NOT at all. My crew members and I found a quiet little spot in the airport, grabbed some coffee (Thank God that the Coffee Beanery in the DTW airport start open later due to many flight delays and cancellations), plugged our devices in, kicked our feet up, and hung out in that airport.

please enjoy this fuzzy picture of me and my crew during our delay. The blurriness is exactly what we were feeling on the inside, I'm sure. |
Flight Attendant life isn't always glamorous, but it can always be fulfilling with a great crew and some positivity.
